The Politics of the Wall – Between the Scenes | The Daily Show

– What I find sad and funny at the same time is
that in my honest opinion, this wall thing has just devolved into politics. I’ll tell you why I say that. Because Trump
doesn’t want to admit that he doesn’t actually
care about the wall, he just wants to say that
he built the wall, right? So if you look at his
negotiations with the Democrats, he says fine, I don’t want
a wall for the whole border, I just want a wall in
sections and then he’s like, actually it doesn’t
have to be a wall, it just has to be a fence,
steel structures-ish in certain places,
and then he goes and says, which we
already have really. And then it’s like,
so what do you want? Then the Democrats are
like, we’ll give you a few billion to upgrade
the existing structures. And he’s like, no,
I want my wall. And they’re like,
yeah but we’ll give you money for the
fence and he’s like, no, I want the wall
even if it’s a fence. (laughing) And it’s like wait,
so you just want to say you got the wall. And then on the Democrats’ side, they’re like, we don’t
want you to be able to say you got your wall. That’s the thing, ’cause he
says he wants five billion, but if they said we’ll
give you one billion for your wall, he
would take it and say I got my wall, and
then the Democrats… it’s just, it’s just devolving into a game of
politics right now. And I don’t know,
on the one hand, you’d be like, just, if
people are not getting paid, if people were, you have to
ask yourself an honest question as a politician, right? And that is the lesser evil. Do you genuinely believe
that you could not beat Trump if you gave him his wall? Do you know what I mean? Then I think your policies
are not good enough. I think you should
be able to beat him whether or not you
give him his wall or some money for it. On the other hand, there are
some furloughed employees, we had some at the show who
were like, no, screw him. Don’t give him the
thing, it’s a waste of money, and it’s
a metaphor that says more about America than
just the physical structure. So it is a tough – (applauding) I do believe this
though, I still say, you wouldn’t have these problems in America if it
was as simple as, if there’s a shutdown, people
in Congress don’t get paid. Don’t get paid. (applauding) People are a lot more
likely to negotiate when their money’s on the line. Cause now they’ll just be
like, all these employees must make a plan- YOU must
make a plan, Mitch McConnell. See how it works. (offbeat motivating music)

  2. I agree with others who've said you can't give in to this kind of behavior. If you give him his wall, which is wasteful spending, others will follow suit. Once you set a precedence that this kind of behavior gets results others will think it works for them too from Mayors to Governor's to the next President.

  3. The reason i think trump should never get "his wall" is because if he gets a wall in any capacity he can use that as a slogan for his next rally. and the sheeple will vote for him in droves

  4. A said what Trevor said if it were members of Congress going without pay for a month they would be quick to negotiate when it doesn't affect them they don't care

  5. My problem with it he NEVER had a real plan. Now what's he going to do with the us paid prototypes sitting in san Diego? Use those for the sections he wants to fix. Drain the swamp yet? Or charge admission for tourists to see " the great wall of america". Everyone can pee on it to make it " gold".

  6. If these shutdowns continue, I wouldn't be surprised if the government started hemorrhaging skilled employees. Why work for a boss who won't pay you on the regular?

  7. To make sure congress never gets paid is a horrible mistake to be made. They'd be incentivized to continue funding (even if it didn't make any sense) just to keep their pay and it would mess up any congressmen or congresswomen who are not financially well off so it can effectively be used as a tool by the wealthier of congress to say "vote for my bill or you don't receive your next paycheck" which they made need. Horrible, horrible mistake.

  8. Most members of Congress are very wealthy and can afford to miss a few paychecks. Stopping their pay during a government shut down would just cause the wealthiest members of Congress to have more negotiating power.

  9. Trump is a con artist , not a president.

Like everything Trump does, the wall is nothing more than a money making scheme. He will use the money to pay off his debts. (Putin)

Also does anyone actually believe he cares about anyone, other than himself.
Because he is Trump first, and everyone else dead feckin last.
He is trumping America and the world, and not enough people seem to care.
    And that is fuckd up.

Donald J (ust) Trump (ing) in vain to remain relevant.
    It’s truly sad.

  10. Congress will negotiate if they don't get paid? Their pay check is only a portion of their income. Their real money comes from lobbyists.

Sounds clever though. Got some claps.

  11. Can we petition to have that on the 2020 ballot? Congress and government officials don’t get paid the next time they pull something stupid like a government shutdown?

  12. Bullshit! Congress cannot give in to this hateful, ignorant bully! Trump was stupid enough to promise something he couldn't possibly deliver in order to whip up the #MAGA racists! That wasn't "politics", it was just plain stupid! The joke's on Trump! He started something he can't finish, so Nancy Pelosi WILL finish it! And if
McCarthy and McConnell know what's good for them they will cooperate and keep the government open!
Trump will get his border wall when Moscow gets a "Trump Tower!"

  13. It's a symbol Trevor. And it involves more than country, starting by Mexico, and it involves more than history period, like Berlin's wall. You Americans need to see beyond yourselves and understand that you are a reference, and right now you're being the worst reference because you're not United against madness

  14. I hate to say it, but the idea that people in congress shouldn't get paid during a shutdown doesn't really work. Because most of them are very wealthy and because, in that scenario, a President could use a shutdown or threat thereof to try to coerce congress into doing what they want. And we all know Trump would.

  15. People in Congress not getting paid wouldn't do shit Trevor. They are all crooked fucks worth hundreds of millions each

  16. Stopping Congress' paychecks is NOT enough, but it makes more sense than shutting down the government over a wall. Almost every legislator is independently wealthy (they don't rely on paychecks to survive), and government shutdowns occur because of funding disputes between Congress and the president. They are only incentivized by voter outcry over the suffering of employees and consumers of federal services.
Therefore, both congressional and executive branch salaries should be discontinued, and federal workers should continue to be funded.

  17. Just one more anti-trump news show! Why does the mainstream media hate Trump so much? Because he doesn't give a shit what they think or say about him. Main stream media is big business and all they really care about is making sure YOU are watching their advertising because that's their revenue source. So it has little to do with reporting real news. It's all about ratings.

  18. Money grubbing main stream media has discovered they get much more attention, and thus better ratings, hating Trump than they do actually being an unbiased news agency and actually reporting the daily news as it actually happened.

  19. Do so called "news anchors" actually believe what they tell you? Nope. it's just a job and like any hog feeding at the trough they are all much more concerned with getting a regular paycheck. So they say whatever their boss tells them to say.

  20. Trevor, ever since you started revolving your show around Trump you lost your humor. Very unfortunate because you were hilarious at the beginning

  21. I disagree with Trevor. If shutting down the government gets you what you want, then government workers will routinely be threatened with shutdowns for one reason or another. We're supposed to go through the legislative process to make laws.

  22. I didnt watch the show for the while, and now I realize how I actually missed it, it is so good ! hahaha
Also, the French newspaper I read, Mediapart, referenced some of your show in one of their video ! Congratulation, you become influential even abroad 🙂 Keep the good job going on and thanks to your team as well !
    Here is the video :

  23. Trump dually benefits from a government shutdown: 1) He gets his useless wall built as a monument to his dwindling base. 2) He weakens the government to depend on a king. Better keep your fingers crossed that Mueller is his check mate and that Pelosi has a solid plan. We're watching our country disintegrating into an oligarchy. Many of our establishments, (EPA), are anemic.

  24. Lol…no one in the audience was feeling Trevor on that first point! 😄 No one is down with just giving in to trump

  25. This is the second time in a week Trevor has said something disappointing. We should never let Trump have any money for the wall. It would be just like paying off a hostage taker.

  26. Like I said before, it will go from a cement wall, to a steel barrier, to a chain link rent a fence, and finally will be a Hollywood recycled backdrop of the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings facing Mexico. Trump with sing his victory by saying "You see, I build the wall, the Eye of Sauron will scare the brown people away, it's guarantee to work you won't be disappointed, I saw it in Lord of the Rings!"

  27. Congress gets paid in a government shut-down? They're paid by the government, so why should they be any different from any other government-paud worker? 😡

  28. Trevor you are wrong here it’s not politics it’s a wimp. It’s better you watch this scene as you are getting slippery with your program.keep it fun and no more if u intend to last bro

  29. Hi just want to tell you that we watch your videos (about Trump) in school in Germany. My englisch teacher is watching you with us in class !😛🙋🏻‍♀️

  30. I say we all get together and send legos to build the wall, win, win we don't pay 5 billion or 30 billion which is what he is really asking for and he gets to build his wall especially since he doesn't care what it's made of or called. There problem solved.

  31. Righto on everything except the paying congress bit. How many of them actually rely on this income for anything? They do seem to be very, very attached to the power their positions bring. Maybe we the people should be able to vote to recall them any and every time they clearly fail at their number one job–keeping the government running. And while we're at it, we should be able to fire them whenever they do not live up to what they promised to do in their campaigns. When you or I don't do what we were hired to do, we get sacked. Why not them? Why should they be able to lie shamelessly to get into office and them just do what their donors want?

  32. Don’t give him shit, don’t spoil him, don’t allow him to do this type of terrorist act eveery time he wants something.
Also, yeah, cut the congress payrolls if the gov shut-down. Don’t pay people who don’t do their job right.

  33. Trump is egotistical, simple as that. He wants to make his mark on the US, so that in years time people will point to the wall and say "Trump built that". And for him, that is what this presidency is about, doing something that will mean people will remember him.

Apparently he asked about the possibility of NASA landing people on Mars during his first term. Not that Trump cares one bit about NASA, but because Trump knows it would mean he would be remembered as the President who landed people on Mars.

    Don't feed the troll.

  34. You don't give a toddler tamper-tantruming what he or she wants, otherwise he or she will keep doing it to get more what they want. If Trump gets his Wall though a shutdown, then he'll know he can keep doing it to get everything he wants. We can't show weakness to someone who is a bully. Otherwise it won't be a democracy.

  35. I don't know either to listen your channel or Fox news ? Because you both organizations are no longer practicing journalism rather you guys are spokesperson for democrats and republicans………..

  36. But Trevor it's not just the wall. Its the fact that Trump speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Yes. The wall is now a metaphor.

  37. Exactly true he doesn't care about the wall really he just want to be able to say I did this. He wants to do something president Obama didn't do.

  38. Trevor, you're coming to Minnesota in February – you're in trouble!!! Tomorrow in Twin Cities temp forecast at 16 below zero with windchill of 40-50 below. Better put on all the pants you own! (Then your momma will really say you're fat!). Seriously, come prepared.

  39. The logic behind the argument is that people vote for people based upon sound policy and sufficient implementation of that policy. Yet people voted for Trump, people vote for Democrats in Congress even though they disagree with Congress, and people vote for Republicans in Congress even though they disagree with Congress. In fact, your comment of "lesser of two evils" is precisely why both parties strive so hard for "as evil as possible, but ever so slightly less than the other side". In such an atmosphere, giving in based purely on politics clearly is a recipe for failure to be reelected.

Put another way, imagine if you took a lot of major policy issues, did a lot of polling with R/D attached, and presented it to the respective members of Congress that showed that R/D alike agree on a lot of policy ideas and that it would be politically safe to push for a lot of positive reforms in the country, however about 50% of them for R and 50% for D would be against long-established stated party policy.

Ie, you literally have your own party members telling you to go against party policy. So, would you speak for changing party policy and vote for laws against them? Even worse, think about all the policy stuff that your party does say it stands for but you've never had the backing to enact it. Do you suddenly vote for a law you think will actually pass and then own the consequences of that policy? This is precisely the questions that seem to happen all the time and always lead to Congress, R and D alike, refusing to act because the worst thing they could possibly do is see their policy goals be reached and for it to potentially blow up in their faces.

  40. The Wall 😂😂😂😂. What a worldwide phenomenon. My hometown Kerala had a month long discussion and action about a human wall, it's a different story but long story short after a massive Floods last August I don't think such time and effort should have been invested in petty religious issues and more attention should have been to rebuilding Kerala but whatever it happened

  41. What I say is why don't they hold congress and trumps paychecks for as long as the government shutdown is going on for and give give it to government workers instead

  42. I absolutely LOVE the btwn the scenes and u actually see what Trevor believes!! They're great. Itd be great to hang w him and talk over beers ya know?!

  43. They shouldn’t give him ANY money for it. The lesser evil is still evil. In this case, a billion dollars for a pointless FUD/vanity project is a waste. The lesser evil is not the better choice when you refuse to look at all the options. It’s a matter of refusing the existence of even lesser, or entirely non-evil, options. This is the whole problem with voting for the duopoly instead of other parties. Also, you don’t compromise with sociopaths. Give them an inch and they take the whole damn ruler and call it a mile.

  44. While we all here about how much Trump loves Twitter, maybe that's really his back channel is to Russia! He does everything else out in open, why not that too? Everyone is probably thinking…no one can be that stupid! Hahaha

  45. So true…and at the expense of American government employees. Does anyone want to live in a house/apartment with no walls? A portion should be allocated for securing the border with a wall/barrier. They should've been on furlough with all the other federal employees.

  46. It was always just politics and spin on the wall. The Democrats don't even have to give anything. As long as the coalition of the brain dead: Coulter and Limbaugh; will get off his ass about it, he'll just claim he got his wall and move on.

  47. Dems can not give in everytime trump makes an unreasonable demand. If the shut down worked he would shut down the government over every minor thing that crops up. The Dems really need to reinforce the message that he's not getting his way just because he has spat his dummy out

  48. Why is it ALWAYS the Democrats who are pressured to be the bigger people in negotiations like this? Why does the "liberal" media never pressure the GOP to grow up and act like adults? It's like, everybody just figures the GOP will never compromise, bc they are children. Well, what's that got us? have they learned their lesson? yes, they have, they've learned that if they continue to be uncompromising and intransigent, the Dems will eventually give in, bc the so called "liberal" media will pressure them, often using GOP talking points, while barely pressuring the GOP and rarely asking them about Dem talking points.

  49. Posted after the first shutdown of 2019. Considering the 2020 election is coming up, I would say that now would of been the time to act like your money is on the line because people will remember your stance on this issue (as ridiculous as it is). People can vote these people out since they're not doing so great and not caring about the people who are out of work at that time (or rather at the time of the next shutdown that is being predicted for February). I do agree that the idea would of made them feel more of the heat.

  50. If it was possible he would say give Mount Rushmore an upgrade with my face. He wants to put his name in the history of USA and that's it. It's something like the old Kings or Emperors used to do. It has nothing to do with security or anything. It's just he wants the people of USA to remember him as THE GREAT RULER WHO BUILT THE WALL or in short, DONALD THE WALL forever. He is having a hard time compromising since Nancy Pelosi is a woman too because he clearly has issues about his Mom and with his wife.

  51. it would be pretty hilarious if he got $1bil's worth of spearhead funding for the wall, and in the open beta of the southern border barrier, immigrants actually got over it; the optics of that would make the wall even less justifiable and more unpopular than it already is — let him have the money, the operations research on the actual effects of the policy should speak for itself

  52. "The Wall" was just a xenophobic metaphor. None but the stupidest of Trumptards thought it might actually be built.
